Moth promo 1

The brief

Moth are building quantum computing applications for the creative industries, including tools for music, IP protection, gaming, and VFX. They needed a film to act as a promo and explainer to be used in a presentation at SXSW London 26 and online that would make quantum computing feel tangible, exciting, and accessible, teasing their new videogame release, Quantum Backrooms.

I asked Antony to help with the AI history and gen AI section, and we turned it around in six days.

We used a range of tools to suit each shot, a blend of traditional 2D AE and 3D C4D motion graphics, a shot made in Cavalry, and some gen AI video.

Moth were happy with the film and asked for a second that explored in more detail how the game works, including transitions in and out of in-game footage.

What I learned

Generative AI video has a hard time with geometric precision

We tried to have it follow the white-line geometric theme in the video, but it tended toward smudginess where the geometry overlapped, where classic CGI offered more precision, so we used the AI video sparingly. It helped us deliver a complex section we couldn’t have made manually within the project timescale. We generated start and end frames and tested outputs from Gemini, Firefly, Hailuo, Veo and Seedance, iterating prompts until we had something good, then upscaled with Topaz.

A little more about quantum computing

Its important to understand the subject matter for an explainer. I came into the project with a basic grasp of quantum physics, now know more about qubits, Bloch spheres, and collapsing superpositions. Checking in with quantum algorithm specialist Pierre Fromholtz helped me understand the theory and find the right balance of scientific accuracy with creative interpretation.

Result

The film supported the launch of Quantum Backrooms and Moth's wider positioning in the creative-tech space. Thanks to Harry, Declan and Pierre at Moth for the project, and to Antony for collaborating on the build. The music is Floss by CSV.
